How to make part of a picture color and other parts black and white with Adobe Photoshop

In this Photoshop tutorial, you will learn how isolate parts of a picture that you want to be color, while other parts of the picture are black and white. This video will step you through taking a color image, turning it to black and white using the desaturate feature, then the procvess of painting some color back into the image by using the History Brush tool. This allows you to easily paint the original colors back into the picture, but only in areas that you desire.

Thank you so much for the tip! I had a beautiful picture of my daughter I wanted to turn to black and white and leave the vivid colors of the fall flowers she was smelling. I searched many sites to find help to do my project. All of them so flustating and then ..I found this. WoW! Thank you so much for making this easy. My picture is just what I was wanting. quicker & easier way to do this:

1.) create a new layer and fill it with black or white
2.) set the layer's mode to saturation
3.) erase the areas where you want the original color to come through

I do not have Photoshop, but i have 'Arcsoft PhotoImpression 5' and 'Microsoft Office Picture Manager.' Do you know if there is any way that I could achieve the same affect as you have with these programs?
