You can convert a photo to a duotone in Photoshop using its Duotone feature and you can customize the duotone and determine just how much of each color is applied to the image.

On a related note, I had a native Photoshop file that was linked to a Freehand file. When I edited the PS file (in PS) and re-saved it, the Freehand file to which it was linked did not want to open. I waited 15 minutes while the "beachball" spun, finally I force quit Freehand. This does not happen with TIFF files, but only with native PS files. This has been happening since PS CS2.
