Hi: Thanks for the presentation. Is this setup applicable to only a single web site (non-ISP)? How would this be done for an ISP offering Joomla to numerous hosted websites on the server?

Also you gave the IUser account Write access to the temp or sessions directory. Is this safe for an ISP.

Thanks.

Hi Scuff,

I'm not sure I understand your scenario. This would apply if you have a Windows dedicated server (or VPS). If you have normal shared hosting, you would not have access to the Windows Desktop, so this wouldn't apply.

I hope I answered your question.

Best,
Michael

Ooops, I missed your second question. I'm really not sure how to answer that, as I'm not a security guru. However, IUSR NEEDS to be able to read and write session info otherwise it cannot use sessions.

Not sure if I am in the right forum for this post... sorry if it should be elsewhere.

Installed joomla 1.5rc4 as per your instructions...thank you for the great tutorial...struggle with the install until I watched it.

Found a couple of interesting things out....
When I was done and went to the admin control panel .. and made changes to the global configuration ...I was notified that the configuration.php was locked and not available for writing. I granted Internet Guest Account write permissions and it works... can you see a problem with doing so?

The next thing I did was attempt to install a component and was notified that it could not create the com_ and failed. So I made the entire website directory writeable for the Intternet Guest Account writeable...I have the default site as one thing (non Joomla) and the joomla site under a directory in IIS.

Can you see a problem with running Joomla under this configuration?

Lastly when I go to the Global Config ... no matter what change I make I get (2) "Delete Failed (a long alpha numeric code that changes each time)
The change goes through ... but the error is annoying. Thoughts?

Yeah, you will need to play with the permissions. I'll see if I can get together a comprehensive list of exactly what permission you will need.

Hi seaeagle,

With respect to changes not taking place, make sure you restart your webserver after you have made changes to the php.ini file. With the page auth issue, are you using IIS or Apache?

Hi Seaeagle,

The permissions gotchas in IIS are always not granting the correct permissions to the IUSR account. Remember you will need to go to Advanced when granting the permissions to apply to subdirectories.

Very cool... I was about to suggest that you start looking for duplicate installations and verify the location of your active PHP directory. Glad you got it

Re: Joomla Installation 3 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
Thank you for your clear and concise tutorials. I have some questions about how this CMS functions, though. I see that you are installing Joomla directly into the root folder of the default Website. If I am using Joomla to create pages of a site, do those pages have to also live in the www root folder? Do they have to live elsewhere? Can they live elsewhere?

Maybe I just need to learn more about how Joomla works. Can you direct me to an overview of Joomla's functionality? Say my installation is successful. Where do I go from here?

Thanks, WCW
