What goes into running this site

People often think that things are far easier and less time consuming than they really are. Hey, we just produce a few videos here and there. What's it take to do a 10 minute video anyway? The answer may be more than you think.

First off, we may not have all of the answers before we make a video, so a great deal of research may go into it. For example, as I write this, I am researching what it takes to get SEO working on IIS with Joomla. In fact, the video for this would have been done a week ago if it were easy, but I have run into terrible roadblocks, and have spent at least 4 hours fighting with it. I will find the answers, and will have the process laid out in a video that will make it look simple, but only out of a great deal of trial and error. The goal? To save thousands of others from having the same trial and error process that those before me have had. Either way, it is hours and hours.

Once we have the process needed to make the video, it gets scripted. Yes, the videos we do appear loosely made, but a basic script is needed to keep it going on track and in sequence. This can take a solid hour.

Next we have to setup our computer or virtual machine with whatever prerequisites we need for the video. At times, it means installing a complete operating system from scratch... for a 5 minute video.

Then there is the recording process. You would be blown away to learn how many times I may make a mistake and have to start over, or someone walks into the room, etc. etc. Recording a 5 minute video is easily a 1 hour process.

Once recorded, give it another hour or two to edit the video, do all the zooming and panning, compile the video, and upload it. FInally the little writeup you see on the site.

All considered, a 5 or 10 minute video is easily a solid day of work.

How We Make Money Doing This

We have costs, and we do need to eat. It is obvious to anyone that there is advertising throught the site. But how does that advertising pay us? Most of the advertising on the site is affiliate marketing. In other words, if you see an ad for web hosting, and you click that ad, we don't make any money. We only make money if you sign up with the host and STAY signed up for a period of time. Some of the advertising on the site is in the form of Google ads. These are the pay per click ads, and we get paid when you click those ads. Here is an idea how much: In the last 20 days we have had 5,250 unique visitors to this site. 10 of them have clicked on Google ads, making us a grand total of just over $4.
