Introduction to the Asterisk Open Source PBX Telephony Platform
As we will be producing and collecting tutorials that are specific to the Asterisk PBX (public branch exchange) as a part of our VOIP section, we thought it fitting to start off with an introduction to Asterisk for those of you are are not familiar with it. In a nutshell, it is a free PBX software for anything from your home phone, to a multinational network of offices. You can use Asterisk as a simple phone and answering machine, or you can use it as the backbone of your brand new phone company... really! It is extremely powerful and so full featured that there are scores of amazing possibilities that you can only perform with Asterisk. With this software and some extremely inexpensive hardware, you can have a phone system for your company that blows systems costing tens of thousands (or hundreds of thousands) of dollars out of the water.
Here are some examples of things Asterisk can do: It can serve as the gateway from just about any VoIP service to your home phone, it can forward calls to your cell phone from anywhere, you can create VoIP connections to anyone on the Internet, manage voicemail, prompts, you can create a phone system that causes your calls to find you wherever you are, you can do just about anything you can think of doing with a telephone... it is all up to you.
