Yahoo! Search MarketingMySQL is a multithreaded, multi-user SQL database management system which has over 10 million installations. It runs as a server providing multi-user access to databases. It is by far the most popular and common database used in web applications throughout the world, and almost all hosting companies provide it free of charge to their users.

MySQL AB makes MySQL Server available as free software under the GNU General Public License (GPL). For this tutorial we are going to download and install MySQL on a Windows 2003 server with IIS for a web server.

While there are many options in the installation, most of them are outside the scope of this tutorial. Here, our goal is to get MySQL running on your server so you can go on to use it as your database for other web applications Looking for more help? Search Amazon for MySQL books

The tutorial is about 'how to get it installed', and not about all of the options, which will be in a future tutorial. The reason I go into what you consider painful detail is because what is obvious to you is not always obvious to others... and that is why so many tutorials fall short for many people. We generally assume that others have what our perception of a basic understanding is, but that is not often the case. Thankfully, technology has granted us the wonders of the slider bar that allows us the ability to jump forward through what we already understand while others follow along. That you might assume that others don't need the parts you don't need is naive, and that you you are offended enough to comment on it is elitist. Take it easy and remember that what is obvious to you right now was not always so, and the nature of this site is to help EVERYONE that needs help on these topics with as little presumption as possible.

Pretty useless
written by Stewart, May 29, 2008
I don't think anybody really needs 1.5 minutes of you showing them how to download the installation files from the MySQL website. Instead of wasting time on that and obvious things like "Now I'm going to get the setup file from the zip file and move it to the desktop" and "Now I'm going to delete the setup file from the desktop", why not focus on the options in the MySQL configuration and actually explain why you've made the choices you've made?

As it is now, it's pretty useless.
